As the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League gets underway, we preview the teams in contention, analyse their past performances and look at the key players in the franchise. In this piece, we look at Delhi Daredevils, who have mostly flattered to deceive.

Past performances: In most seasons, Delhi have been tipped to be among the top contenders to win the crown. But, while they have come close on a number of occasions, they have never ever made it to the final till date. In 2008 and 2009, they were losing semi-finalists, and in 2012 they made it to the playoffs before falling aside. In the other three editions, they were knocked out in the group stage itself. Delhi will be looking for a massive improvement on the same.

Key players

Kevin Pietersen: His days as an international may be over, but Pietersen is still a much-in-demand T20 player, evident from the whopping sum that Delhi have shelled out for him. The good part for Delhi this time is that KP will be available for the entire season now that he doesn’t have any international commitments. It is no secret that if Pietersen hits form, he can be among the most dangerous T20 players in the world. In the previous seasons, Pietersen has shown amazing consistency for Delhi, and will be keen to continue in the same vein. Also, he will have a point to prove to the ECB, who have not retained him. Remember, he has also been appointed captain, so he will have a chance to make an impression as leader as well.

Murali Vijay: When Vijay takes field this year, he might well be feeling out of place. For six seasons, he walked out in yellow for Chennai Super Kings, and actually played some super knocks, including one that won them a final. The good part for Vijay is that he has got a handsome contract with Delhi, a proper recognition of his talent and experience in the format. Vijay should be made to open for Delhi as well. He can clear the ropes with ease, and on his day is pretty much unstoppable. With the kind of strokes he possesses, Vijay can prove to be an extremely handy gain for Delhi. He also has the experience of featuring in winning finals unlike some of the others in the squad.

Mohammed Shami: Unlike their batting, Delhi do not have a very strong bowling line-up. A lot would thus depend on India’s latest pace find. Shami doesn’t have a lot of IPL experience, but success on the international front should give him the confidence to perform well in the T20 league. He has the pace to trouble batsmen.

Other important players: Ross Taylor, Jean Paul Duminy, Dinesh Karthik, Quinton de Kock and Wayne Parnell
