Session 2:
India extended their lead beyond 100 by virtue of their openers giving them a solid start. First, India bowled out New Zealand for 262 runs to take a crucial lead of 56 runs and then scoring 52 runs at loss of one wicket in form of KL Rahul. So at Tea, India lead by 108 runs.
Though Kohli decided to start the post lunch session with seamers but soon he realized his mistake and brought back spinners from both ends. Ashwin strike on his first delivery after lunch and get rid of settled Santner. Santner edged one going away from him, where Saha held that one nicely. And then an over came from Jadeja where he struck thrice in an over and it turned the course of the inning. Jadeja trapped Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi in front of stumps and Rohit Sharma held a spectacular catch to dismiss Trent Boult in the same over. That's how Ravindra Jadeja completed his fifer and most important four of his five wickets are leg before. This show how straight he bowls. Ashwin took the wicket of BJ Watling to bundle out NZ for 262 runs. Watling looking to take single to keep strike edged one straight to the bowler. India took a first inning lead of 56 runs.
India started their cautiously and played sensibly. Murli Vijay continued from where he had left in first inning and looked to play with soft hands. On the other hand, Rahul tried to be little aggressive and keep the scoreboard ticking. He struck couple of boundaries off Santner and tried to break his rhythm. But just in the last over before tea, Rahul handed over an easy catch to Ross Taylor in first slip off Ish Sodhi.
Session 1:
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja showed why they are so vulnerable to face in the home conditions. India started the inning on a positive note with Ashwin striking Latham first with a beautiful slider and then in the very next over ex- Kiwi skipper falling on a straight delivery to be trapped in front of the stumps off Jadeja. New Zealand lost their three wickets in span of 11 runs. Then few overs later a big moment came for India when extra bounce and turn from Ashwin went through the gate of Williamson. Then Santner and Ronchi blocked for a while and frustrated home team but again full ball from Jadeja tempted Ronchi to play sweep and was adjudged leg before. They added 49 runs for the fifth wicket which brought back New Zealand in the game for some extent and reduced the deficit less than 100. Santner and BJ Watling are on the crease now and they would like to get near the Indian total of 318.
